"People never dreamed this could happen in Jos…If this can happen in Jos, nowhere is safe anymore."
The slogan of Plateau state is “The Home of Peace and Tourism,” yet the people of the Plateau have not known peace since 2001 due to various political and economically motivated conflicts. Plateau State sits at the heart of Nigeria in the region popularly known as the middle belt. There are over 40 unique ethnic groups, each with their own language, culture, food, and way of life. Plateau is home to 2 Nigerian heritage sites, the Riyom rock and the basalt rock formations.
The people of Plateau State have been working tirelessly to rebuild our peace and restore our tourism. By highlighting this specific subject, this project aims to bring attention to the narratives of resilience, peace, and recovery in Plateau State. Through powerful visual storytelling, our goal is to challenge the current narrative and contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the region. Additionally, the project aims to inspire positive action and support towards sustainable tourism initiatives that will benefit local communities.
We grew up hearing about the glory days of the Plateau. When it used to be the melting pot of the country because it had the best weather, people, food, education, and atmosphere. Days full of picnics at the parks, visiting animals at the zoo, swimming in waterfalls during school breaks and long hikes on Saturday mornings. Days that have become relics of the past due to violent crises, displacement, and disenfranchisement. What this has also led to is a single, prevailing narrative that Plateau State is unsafe and volatile, and we want to be instrumental in changing that narrative.
Located 25km from Jos along the Jos-Akwanga road, the Riyom Rock is one of natures' most spectacular rock formations. It is called the Riyom rock because it is located in Riyom, and this rock is famous for its ability to maintain balance.
This walls are located within the premises of Jos Museums, and historically served as refuge for the city and a high point to watch out for incoming attacks. In order to protect mud walls from erosion due to rainfall, an aluminum roof has been mounted on top of it.
